Men and Women

Image of the Week: Men and Women

These signs were on the doors for The Teddy Hall of Binyanei Hauma, at the Jerusalem Conference Center on February 2. I do not know what event they were for, but thought with the current topic of segregation of men and women it was interesting to find signs on the door of such a public building. The Central bus station is the blue reflection in the glass doors.

Well, it may have been that a conference of Ultra-Orthodox Jews was taking place, but, even so, It is frightening to see such signs on a public building.

Of course, it could be that the separation was to facilitate security checking?
I’m the last person to look for excuses – but it would be interesting to know the real reason.

Anyone living in Jerusalem can find out? Are the signs permanent?

I got the impression it was only for security

        You may be right.

But it would be interesting to know the truth. Segregation by gender is a growing phenomenon here. If action is not taken to stop the practice now, it will overwhelm us and change the character of Israel for ever.

The question is: who will have the courage to face this growing fundamentalist trend? Certainly not this government in its current configuration. Not the municipalities, who have never even tried to enforce a law as simple as no smoking in public places.
And we secularists huff and puff and demonstrate about the price of cottage cheese, but do nothing.
Maybe this is because, as Anthony Reich points out in his article about the strike, we are all too busy struggling to make a living and to survive to the end of the month.
The insidious penetration of religious fundamentalist philosophy into the fabric of our society is taking place before our eyes.
And we are are allowing it to happen by default.

So the reason for the separation in this photo DOES matter.

Well, it matters more in Jerusalem than it does in Denver!
