French President Nicolas Sarkozy has a goal to expand the prowess of the European Union by working to create a Union of the Mediterranean. His efforts have not gone without reward, as the first meeting of the new union is scheduled for this week.
This new union has prospects to advance the economic conditions and quality of life for many residing in the new economic bloc. Details have not been discussed yet, but all nations bordering the Mediterranean Sea are attending (except for Libya), and all EU member nations are participating in the new trade agreements.
There are questions, however, if this will work. Israel is going to participate. So will Syria, Lebanon, and a handful of north Africa Muslim countries who are staunch enemies of Israel. Will they be able to get along? Join in the union will require trade agreements with ALL participating countries. The Israel embargo will have to go.
I am not sure if this will work, but it is worth a shot. Worst comes to worst, Israel’s new friend France will just look kind of stupid for trying to get Jews and Muslims to get along.
