LA Times Bias Against Israel

by Eric on August 3, 2010

I just read one of the most blatantly biased articles in a US media source I have seen in quite a long time, and sometimes I get to a boiling point where I feel I must do something.  Rather than just write about it here, I sent the author a note, which is copied below.  If you agree with my stand, please contact the author at edmund.sanders@latimes.comSometimes we have to take action to let the media know that we have noticed their slant and want to see accurate, fair journalism.  In the letter, I forgot to mention the image they used, which also creates an anti-Israel bias, but I already sent the message.

Mr. Sanders,

I am writing in response to your article posted on the LA Times website regarding the violence between Lebanon and Israel this morning.  I find your article to be one of the most blatantly biased articles I have seen written about an Israel-Arab conflict related topic in quite some time in the United States.  The quality of professionalism in this article is barely higher than what I regularly read in IRNA, the state controlled Iranian news source.

The title alone, which neglects to mention the unprovoked attack on Israeli soldiers while literally cleaning brush from border fences, shows such an anti-Israel slant that I thought I was mistaken the first time I read it.  You immediately blame Israel for the death of four people, but wait to address the unprovoked murder of IDF Lieutenant Colnel Dov Harari, a reserve officer as “One Israeli soldier also may have died.”

I will admit that you do give a more balanced point of view later in the article, admitting the conflicting reports at the time the article was published.  However, you continually refer to the Lebanese position first and trivialize the Israeli position.  While I do understand that there is room for interpretation with two different stories, it is the responsibility of the press to find the facts of the situation and present them fairly.  I have always found the LA Times to be biased against Israel, but this is one of the worst examples I have seen in quite a long time.

I ask that, in the future, you try to present a more fair perspective on Israel’s interactions with its neighbors.  The Arab-Israeli conflict is a very complex situation, and it deserves coverage that can educate the public enough to make their own decisions.  Such bias belongs in the opinion section, not as front page news.

Sincerely,

Eric
