Cyprus Blocks Lebanese Flotilla

by Eric on August 21, 2010

Famagusta, Cyprus. ´Alnair´ & other ships in Famagusta docks 7 June 1974The “Mariam” is a Lebanese ship intended to be a second flotilla.  Unlike the first violent episode, this ship is to be filled with women and journalists.  There is no word on whether the ship is intended to be violent, but it is intended to head to the Gaza Strip.

Due to Lebanese law, the ship is not allowed to travel straight to Israeli soil.  According to Lebanon, that includes Gaza at the moment, so the ship has to dock elsewhere on the way.  The ship planned to dock in Cyprus, an Island nation not far from Israel or Lebanon, but the Cypriot government has decided to deny the ship.  A spokesperson said that Cyprus has “moral and legal responsibility” to those allowed into its waters, and that a blockade-busting ship could endanger lives and “regional peace and stability.”

Rather than give up, the ship intends to find another country to dock in on the way.  As of now, they are looking to dock in Greece.

Israel has made it clear that it intends to intercept the ship.  The ship may have ties to Hezbollah, and Israel has no intent to let terrorist ships into enemy territory.
