Israel Eases Gaza Import Rules

by Eric on June 17, 2010

As promised, Israel’s cabinet voted to ease import restrictions in the Gaza Strip.  This was partially due to fallout from the flotilla incident, and it likely a good step for both Israel and the Palestinians.

It is important, however, that Israel does not give away control of the blockade and stop paying attention.  Hamas has made it clear that no one is starving in Gaza.  The Shin Bet has also reiterated that Hamas is still a deadly threat and continues to smuggle weapons and weapon building material into Gaza for use against Israel.

The Israelis are stuck in a very difficult position.  On one hand, there are many people in Gaza simply trying to live their life.  They want peace, prosperity, and freedom for their families.  Israel is not preventing that at all.  Hamas is behind the problems.  However, the world looks at Israel as an occupying aggressor.

Just remember, while many people are peaceful, someone in Gaza is firing rockets.  Someone is building smuggling tunnels.  Someone placed weapons caches under hospitals and schools.  It is surely not Israel, so who really is the bad guy?
