This is kind of fun if you are a fan of Olympic figure skating.

This is fabulous… you can say what you want about the skating Zaretsky siblings (I always find brother-sister pairs a little creepy), but they definitely wore their Israeli-ness on their sleeves in this competition. I actually liked their Schindler’s List dance too.

I think the ultimate win will be when Israelis don’t skate to Hava Nagila or other stereotypically Jewish songs..I think it’s a little kitschy (especially with the kippah). Why not something less tacky?

Thanks for the great comments Maya and Vicki.

I agree that it is fun to see such a Jewish theme on the ice. In the future I hope they can move past the stereotype and compete with the world on a more genuine level. We don’t all sit around eating mazzah ball soup and playing dreidel every.

Bar Rafeili and Esti Ginzburg are proof that Israelis can break through stereotypes. I hope that success moves out into other competitions and cultural events.
