Hamas Greed May Lead to Gaza Blackouts

by Eric on January 28, 2010

The EU is looking to scale back fuel purchases for the Palestinian infrastructure, and a dispute has erupted between Hamas and Fatah leaders.  The dispute may lead to Gaza going dark.

The power plant that powers most of Gaza benefits Hamas more than the Palestinian Authority, yet Hamas refuses to help pay for the fuel costs.  From the Jerusalem Post:

The European Union used to pay for the plant’s fuel as part of an aid package to the Palestinian Authority in the [Gaza Strip].

However, the EU decided to start scaling back and said it wants the Palestinian Authority to find other ways to pay for the fuel. The Palestinian Authority demands that Hamas pay its share.

Hamas insists that the EU resume payments.

A power plant engineer in Gaza said that the plant may shut down on Thursday.  That would leave Northern Gaza without power until Hamas can move forward.  While they try to act like they care about their people, they will probably use this as an excuse to blame Israel for Palestinian suffering.
