American Universities Add New Courses on Israel

by Eric on January 14, 2010

A report prepared by the Cohen Center for Modern Jewish Studies at Brandeis University has shown a 69% increase in the number of courses related to Israel at 246 top universities surveyed.

At the total 316 schools surveyed, 1,400 classes are offered including Israeli studies.  572 of those classes are exlusively dedicated to Israel.

The best news of this study, in my opionion, is that the majority of these courses focus on Israeli society, not the confilct.  Courses such as Israeli film, literature, and art are helping paint a more even and positive picture of Israel in the minds of the thousands of students taking the classes.

The rise in the number of classes, as I witnessed at my alma mater while an undergraduate student, is driven by student and faculty demand.  This means that more students are interested in learning about Israel and doors are being opened for the larger community to join in.
