Sweden Calls Jerusalem Capital of “Palestine”

by Eric on December 5, 2009

For a country that does not exist, it is quite a move to call Jerusalem both the capital of Israel and “Palestine.”  Sweden’s government has made a proposal to the European Union to call Jerusalem a joint capital and recognize it as a joint capital for two nations.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and PA leaders are working against each other to actively lobby European ministers on this proposal.  I think it is an activist proposal that undermines all Israeli attempts to work together with the Palestinians for peace.  Rather, this initially unilateral move would force Israel into an extremely difficult position.

Anyone who has ever been to Jerusalem knows what the city is like.  It is a unified city and the clear capital of one nation.  Ramallah and Gaza City are both Palestinian capital cities, though the Palestinian cities in Judea and Samaria are hardly a nation to govern.

What do you all think of this initiative?  Will it pass?  What will the ramifications be?
