Today’s announcement that Fatah has given itself an indefinite mandate to rule has me thinking. This kind of action would not be accepted most places in the world. What if it were like that in the United States? I thought I would give you something to think about.
- Imagine waking up in the morning and taking your kids to school. You would drive down a road full of men with green masks and rifles. In the basement of your kids’ school, there are weapons including explosive rockets, but only if you live in the South.
- You turn on the TV and can watch one of only a few local news stations. Those stations preach a hatred of Canada and Saturday morning cartoons include Canadians murdering Big Bird live on Sesame Street.
- The Republican Party declared war on the Democrats and the Republicans started shooting and arresting people that are known Democrats. The Democrats are able to hold most of the country, but the Republicans stage a military dictatorship in Texas where they take all of the oil for themselves. Democrats respond by arresting Republicans around the country.
- Canada is so fed up with your violent hostilities that they build a giant fence to keep you out, and you can only go through a certain number of checkpoints to enter Canada. However, Americans often attack Canadian mounties at the border.
- Everyone in your family is unemployed. The government does not do anything to build up the economy, but they hire your far left wing cousin for a “government job” that does not really do much, but at least he gets a paycheck.
- The government persecutes everyone that is not a Christian, but most people are Christian and no one stands up for anyone else.
- The world sends government money to help build power plants and clean water facilities, but the Senate keeps most of it for personal wealth.
That is a mix of West Bank and Gaza Strip life. While it is a fabrication on my part, it is based on something very real. Just something to think about.

This is a very powerful statement about the nature of everyday life for Palestinians.
I hoped this would be a creative way for people outside of the Middle East to see how life really is for many Palestinians, and why we need to work to better their lives, not just stop shooting at each other.
