Iran Plans 10 New Uranium Plants [Angry Rant]

by Eric on November 30, 2009

To show complete disrespect and disdain to the entire world, Iran has announced plans to open ten new uranium enrichment plants.  These plants, for “peaceful purposes,” will allow Iran to build a nuclear weapon much faster.

When will the US and EU realize that the IAEA and negotiations are absolutely useless and that this issue needs to be addressed seriously.  And just “taking it seriously” is not enough, acting means doing something to stop this.

When a national leader gets up on a podium in front of the world and says, “we are going to destroy Israel, oh yeah, we are also building nuclear bombs,” the world needs to act immediately.  This has been going on for years.  What is everyone waiting for?

Israel may be forced to play its hand against Iran.  A war against Iran with no international support could be devastating to the IDF, but would likely prevent devastation on a national civilian scale.  I just don’t understand this.  Can someone explain this to me?

Eric. I feel as strongly as you do on this issue and have written a special piece which I just published. We were not well coordinated, so apologies for this. I hope, however, that my piece goes some way to trying to put some more colour around this very serious issue.

Great, in depth post. For others, you can see it here: http://www.israelsituation.com/2009/11/irans-moment-of-truth/

Plans to build nuclear plants are significantly different than actually building them. Hussein also railed against Israel and claimed to have the capacity to build such a weapon, and we have yet to find ANY evidence of such a program. Iran is different, in that we know they have nuclear enrichment capability, but I still think words are just words until we actually see the capacity to build such things.

Grandstanding can be beneficial on the international political spectrum, regardless of actual intent/ability to attack Israel. Particularly given Iran’s current negotiations with the US and the UN/IAEA, IDF military action could be detrimental to what seems to be a plausible diplomatic process. A hair-trigger Israel could do more harm than good.

Joel. You may be now have read my posting on the subject, and you may have gathered how strongly I feel about this issue.

I disagree with your view that “grandstanding” may be better in this case. You use the Iraq war as an example of jumping in too soon. You may also recall that Iraq was in the process of building of nuclear plant at Osiraq which was destroyed by the Israeli air force in 1981. Israel was roundly criticised at the time, but it seems to be universally recognised now that Israel saved the world from a very nasty situation. The fact that no weapons of mass destruction were found during the Iraq war does not mean that they did not exist. On the contrary, there is clear evidence that they did exist and it seems that the threat (and ultimately execution) of war caused Saddam to rethink the sensibility of having them.

Iran’s “threat” to build 10 new reactors is also accompanied by actions on the ground. Two plants are already under construction. These are sufficient of a threat to the world without the 10 new ones. Iran has shown clearly that it is not interested to negotiate in good faith, and perhaps not at all. If we do not kill this growing threat now, it may get out of control to a point that we will no longer be able to kill it off. Now is the time to act.
