Iran Agrees to Transfer Uranium

by Eric on October 22, 2009

Iran has accepted a preliminary agreement to transfer the bulk of known enriched uranium stockpiles out of the country.  This has the potential to slow down Iran’s work toward a nuclear weapon.

This is a big step in the right direction, but it is by no means a final solution.  It is step one of many that will hopefully end Iran’s nuclear program once and for all.

The deal, which still has to be voted on by the Iranian legislative body, would move 80% of Iran’s enriched uranium to France and Russia.  In the deal, Russia would convert the uranium to fuel rods and France would turn those fuel rods into a metal form that can be used in a power plant.

There is still one big ‘however’ that everyone is forgetting.  Spent nuclear fuel rods contain weapons grade plutonium.  Even if Iran has a peaceful nuclear power plant, the spent fuel rods might not have such peaceful purposes ahead.
