Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu took a secret trip to Russia to meet with top leaders about weapons sales to Iran and Syria. No specifics have been made public, by Yediot Aharonot was able to confirm that the trip took place.
Israel has specifically been lobbying Russian leaders to null a deal to sell the Russian S-300 surface to air missile to Iran, as Iranians would likely use the SAM missiles to defend nuclear development facilities. In August, President Shimon Peres took a trip to Russia and was able to convince Russian President Dmitry Medvedev to consider reversing the SAM agreement with Iran.
Russia is an exteremly important player in the balance of power of the Middle East. Just yesterday Russia and China said they would block any UN Security Council actions against Iran. The least they could do is stop giving them weapons.
