Facebook Declares Golan Heights Part of Israel, Sort Of

by Eric on September 10, 2009

The official international organization that determines the status of disputed territories has made a compromise on the Golan Heights.  After a drive by Honest Reporting, an Israel based media bias watchdog, Facebook has made changes to allow Israelis living in Northern Israel (aka the Golan) to set their hometown to something other than Syria.

Prior settings required Israelis in the region to have their hometown line show their city followed by Syria.  Honest Reporting noted that “although the Golan falls under Israeli law, residents of the region wishing to write ‘Israel’ in the Hometown section of their profiles were not given the option.”

Now Facebookers in the region can set their profile to the Israel network and list the name of their city as their hometown without the Syria appendage.  However, like Judea and Samaria residents, the city names do not say “Israel” as the country.  That part is just blank.

(In case you didn’t realize, there is sarcasm in this post)
