On Tisha B’Av

by Eric on July 30, 2009

For those of you who do not know, Tisha B’Av is the Jewish day of mourning for the loss of the two Temples that stood on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. It is a fast day observed by Jewish people around the world.

The laws for Tisha B’Av are very similar to those of Yom Kippur. We are not permitted to eat for 25 hours, though some continue into the next day. We are not permitted to bathe for pleasure. We are not permitted to wear leather. We are not permitted to apply lotions or creams.

Today we focus on two of the greatest tragedies to ever fall on the Jewish people.

Every day, we recite the following line three times during prayers: “May it be Your will, Lord our G-d and G-d of our fathers, that the Temple be speedily rebuilt in our days.” Today we mourn that it may come true.
