Foreign Minister on South American Tour

by Eric on July 21, 2009

Foreign Minister and Yisrael Beiteinu MK Avigdor Lieberman is in South America this week on a tour aimed at cutting ties between friendly South American countries and Iran. Israel recently pointed fingers at both Venezuela and Bolivia, accusing the countries of supplying Iran with uranium.

Lieberman will makes stops in Brazil, Argentina, Peru, and Columbia. Both United States and Israeli intelligence believe Islamic terrorist groups are training in the mostly lawless outer regions of several countries in South America. Iran recently announced that Mahmoud Ahmadinejad will be visiting Brazil for his first foreign visit since the controversial Iranian Presidential election.

In Argentina, Lieberman will attend a ceremony marking the 15th anniversary of a terrorist attack on a Jewish center in Buenos Aires. Two years before, another attack destroyed the Israeli embassy in the same city. The two attacks killed 114 people and were believed to have been planned by Iran and carried out by Hezbollah terrorists.

Intelligence has shown that Hezbollah is carrying out operations in the “tri-border” area between Paraguay, Brazil, and Argentina. Hopefully this trip will spark the drive to clean things up and bring Israel closer with South American communities.
