Update: First Israeli Drafted in NBA First Round

by Eric on June 26, 2009

Yesterday I said that an Israeli would likely be drafted in the first round of the National Basketball Association 2009 draft. It came true.

Omri Cassipi was the 23rd pick in the first round of the NBA draft. He was picked by the Sacramento Kings. The NBA requires first round picks are given a multi-year contract. The 21 year old Cassipi averaged 12.6 points per game as part of the Macabbi Tel Aviv basketball team. He is a member of the Israeli national basketball team.

Cassipi will be the first Israeli to join an NBA roster. Others have been drafted before, but none have made the final cut.
