Shalit Transfer to Egypt Imminent

by Eric on June 26, 2009

Yesterday marked three years since Gilad Shalit was captured by Hamas on the Gaza border. Since then, his family, all of Israel, and Jews and humanitarians around the world have lobbied Hamas to release Shalit, now 23 years old.

Today a new development has surfaced. The JTA reports that Hamas is making preparations to transfer Gilad Shalit to Egypt for a return home. No one knows if he will be coming alive or in a coffin.

Shalit has been denied visits by the International Red Cross, which constitutes a war crime. According to the generally Israel critical B’Teslem, “international humanitarian law absolutely prohibits taking and holding a person by force in order to compel the enemy to meet certain demands, while threatening to harm or kill the person if the demands are not met.”

Now, sources say that Shalit will be moved to Egypt as part of a prisoner swap that will release an unknown number of terrorists from Israeli prisons. I hope Shalit can be brought home alive. However, is it worth one life for the number that those terrorists may try to take?
