AEPi Initiates Israel’s First Fraternity Chapter

by Eric on June 18, 2009

As an AEPi alumni, I have a little soft spot for this one. The only international Jewish fraternity (ZBT and SAM took Judaism out of their bylaws in the 1970s), Alpha Epsilon Pi, initiated a group of students at the Interdisciplinary Center, known as the IDC, in Herzilya.

AEPi, prior to the initiation, had 83,000 undergraduate student members in the United States and Canada. Founded in 1913, it is one of the oldest Jewish organizations in the world. The founding members came together after being denied entry into other New York University fraternities due to antisemitism.

In recent years, AEPi has raised $100,000 for Magen David Adom and $135,000 for the holocaust museum in Washington, DC.

Mazel tov to the new brothers! I hope AEPi can spread to other campuses in Israel. It is a great way to form an instant friendship with thousands of men around the world.
