Peres Says No Military Action Against Iran

by Eric on April 16, 2009

Israel’s President, Shimon Peres, said that Israel will take no military action against Iran. Peres told US President Obama’s envoy that any rumor of a pending military action is unfounded.

The meeting was part of a high ranking visit from envoy George Mitchell who earlier in the day met with Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman.

From the AP:

Shimon Peres’ office says he told visiting envoy George Mitchell Thursday
that progress with Iran depended on international cooperation and exploring
whether dialogue presented a real opportunity or if Tehran was just
stalling.

Israel sees a nuclear Iran as the most serious threat to its existence.
Iran’s president has called for Israel’s destruction, and Iran has tested
long-range missiles that could strike Israel.

While not directly threatening Iran’s nuclear facilities, Israel has
kept the military option open.
