Israeli Security Guards Prevent Hijacking

by Eric on April 27, 2009

Israeli security guards working on an Italian cruise ship, pictured here in a stock photo, fought off Somali pirates using pistols and a fire hose. The ship had 991 passengers and 536 crew on board.

The managing director of the company said, “We use them because they are the best and we have just had a demonstration of that.”

The ship, the MSC Melody, was 600 miles off of the Somalian coast, 200 miles north of the Seychelles, when it was attacked by the pirates. The six pirates fired at least 200 rounds into the ship. After the confrontation, the ship had broken glass and bullet holes riddling the port side.

A security officer on the ship said that the ship likely came from a much larger ship nearby. The small craft used in the siege would not have had the range to travel that far into the sea.

The private Israeli security company handled the incident well. The siege lasted for well over 20 minutes before the pirates gave up.
