Israel May Use Ballistic Missiles Against Iran

by Eric on March 23, 2009

Most people believe Israel will not send pilots over Iran to drop bombs on the main nuclear sites. There are several main reasons, including flight range and pilot safety. Israel will not send IAF pilots on a suicide mission.

Israel, however, has other means of striking Iran. While Iran has been showing off missiles lately, Israel has been sitting quietly on their arsenal of long range missiles. A Washington DC based think tank has found that Israel could achieve its objectives of severely damaging Iran’s nuclear program with 42 Jericho missiles.

The missiles hold a payload of 750 kg of conventional explosives and could be fired from Israel and hit a target within a few meters. The 42 estimate would cripple Iran’s sites at Natanz, Esfahan, and Arak.

Israel launched an air attack into Iraq in 1981, called Operation Opera, to destroy Iraq’s nuclear reactor. A similar mission was flown into Syria in 2007. Iran is further and better armed, so a missile attack may be necessary. According to strategic reports, only the United States and Russia have satellites capable of giving warning of an impending Jericho III missile.

We will have to wait and see if the Jericho III missiles are used against Iran. What do you think will happen?
