Netanyahu Fails at Unity Government

by Eric on February 23, 2009

Benjamin Netanyahu reached out to Kadima and Labor in an attempt to form a unity government under his leadership, they said no.

Bibi has six weeks to put together a majority coalition government. It looks like the Likud led government will be able to rally 65 out of the 120 Knesset seats. As long as he can put together a majority of 61 MKs, Benjamin Netanyahu will become the Prime Minister.

The major disagreement between Likud and the other major parties is the Palestinian peace process. The parties have different ideas of how to approach the situation and an ideal solution. Likud will not negotiate on Jerusalem. That is one of the major reasons I support them. Kadima and Labor would consider giving up half of the holiest city in the world for a “peace agreement”.

I do not trust any agreement with the Palestinian Authority or Hamas. Look at what happened after Oslo. While the agreement was terrible, Arafat’s PA did not follow any part of the agreement. It was a disaster. The Likud will not fall into that sort of trap again.

Both Netanyahu and the Obama administration have made it clear that they plan to work together as the Israeli government develops and new leaders take their places in the peace talks. I hope peace will come soon. I doubt it, but I can always hope. I would not want peace, however, at any price. I would be willing to see some sacrifice, but Jerusalem is not on the chopping block with the Likud in charge of Israel.
