Kadima – 30. Likud – 28. Yisrael Beiteinu – 15. Labor – 13.
However, even after a last minute win, Livni might still be the biggest looser.
Unless something changes, Livni will get a second opportunity to form a majority government. If she keeps her current alliance with Labor, Livni has a 43 seat coalition. That is far from the 61 needed to ensure a majority.
A Likud-Yisrael Beiteinu right wing alliance would give Bibi 43 seats as well. However, right wing success today gives the right a bigger stronghold than the left.
So, as it goes, Kadima won the election. However, winning today is far from winning a majority in the Knesset. I do not foresee a unity government, as Bibi and Livni simply can’t get along.
I am not sure what would happen if Livni tries and fails twice in forming a majority coalition. If there are any Israeli law experts out there, please let us know in the comments.
