Turkey Might Not Be as Moderate as They Seemed

by Eric on January 31, 2009

It was only about thirty five years ago that Turkey invaded Cyprus. The seemingly pointless war led to a proxy government controlling roughly one third of the island. This tension and remote occupation still lasts to this day.

In the last few years, a growing Islamist fundamental population tried to take control of the government. They failed, but the party did not leave.

In the last few weeks, Turkey has been extremely vocal about their anti-Israel feelings, and they are publicly supporting Hamas. This is at ends with the vast majority of the European Union.

It seemed that Turkey had made a lot of progress in Westernizing. They have come closer to being a full member of the EU on the Euro. This would be a wonderful social and economic boost for the most moderate of the Muslim nations.

However, Turkey is still struggling with their identity. In issues regarding the Middle East, they are still a Muslim nation. They are at peace with Israel, but that does not make the Turks friends with Israel.
