Specific Ways You Can Support an Israeli Soldier

This is a post by new Israel Situation blogger Rachel:

I’m sure that many of you are wondering what we can do in America to help and support Israeli soldiers and citizens at this difficult time.  I’ve compiled  some inexpensive ways that you can make a small difference.  If you have any ideas of your own, please share them in the Comments section, and let me know if these are helpful.  Thanks!

1. Buy a "Shluker" for a soldier
One Israel Fund is partnering with the IDF to distribute "shlukers," which are lightweight packs holding 3 liters of water, to soldiers deployed to Gaza.  Help them make sure every soldier gets one, and learn more by visiting their website.

2.  Order hot pizza and soda for an Israeli unit
For just $25.99, Pizza IDF will deliver a hot pizza pie and a bottle of soda to soldiers serving on the front.  You can also send pizza to a family living in Sderot, baked at a Sderot pizzeria to help the local economy.

3. Knitting skills needed for soldier hats
Things get chilly on the wintertime front.  Join the efforts of "A Package from Home," an Israeli nonprofit that sends care packages to soldiers, to provide every soldier with a warm, woolen hat this winter.  Hats must be fashioned according to IDF regulations.  Learn about the effort here, and read an article on "Chicks with Sticks," a related group, here

4. Pray for an Israeli soldier
The National Council of Young Israel is gathering names of Israeli soldiers currently fighting.  To get an individual name to pray for, or do good deeds in their merit, call the National Council of Young Israel at 212-929-1525×100, or send a fax to 212-727-9526.  Learn more about the effort here

5. Rally support
Find a rally happening in your area compiled by StandWithUs, an organization dedicated to telling Israel’s side of the story.  With rallies happening in New York, Chicago, Minneapolis, Atlanta, and many more places, you’re sure to find a place to display your support.  Strength in numbers.  It really helps.

6.  Monitor the media
You’ve heard this before, but it’s true.  Anti-Israel bias needs to be countered and responded to.  For example, here is an opinion piece in yesterday’s NY Times that falsely depicts the situation in Gaza.  A letter to the editor is desperately needed.  Editors usually print letters proportionate to the response they receive, so even if your letter isn’t printed, it still helps.  Also remember to check out accurate reporting on Israel, such as this article in yesterday’s NY Post that shares the truth about Hamas hiding among children.  (We know the NY Post is definitely not the NY Times, but it still has wide readership here in NYC.)  Monitor reader’s comments below the article and lend your voice for accuracy.
