48,458 Israelis voted in Likud’s Primary yesterday, and the results are interesting. The number one spot, of course, went to Benjamin Netanyahu. Bibi has a tough sell, however, as the top of his list is dominated by known far right politicians.
I have no problem with a far right Likud winning in the Knesset, but many centrists do. However, the “centrist” Kadima has left such a mess that a jump to the right is perhaps the best option on the table.
Likud’s number two is Gideon Saar, followed by Gilad Erdan, Reuven Rivlin, Benny Begin, Moshe Kahlon, Silvan Shalom, Moshe Yaalon, Yuval Steinitz and Leah Ness. Eleven through twenty on the list are Yisrael Katz, Yuli Edelstein, Limor Livnat, Yossi Peled, Haim Katz, Michael Eitan, Dan Meridor, Tzipi Chotobali, Gila Gamliel.
Similar to Labor’s recent election, Likud had polling problems requiring an additional two hours of voting time. Lines were long at the few voting centers.
Now the real showdown begins. Kadima, Labor, and Likud have a final list. It is up to the voters to decide who prevails in February. I just hope the voters remember the embarrassments and troubles of the Kadima-Labor coalition.
