Increased Gaza Violence May Spread From Longer Range Rockets

by Eric on December 22, 2008

19 rockets and 3 mortars were launched into Israel yesterday, injuring one Israeli and hitting locations as far as Ashkelon, 10 miles from the Gaza Strip. The IDF responded over the weekend to increased rocket attacks with two targeted air strikes.

Israeli intelligence is now warning of increased rocket capabilities. The Shin Bet believes Hamas now has rockets with a range of 30 miles, placing Beer Sheva within range. Beer Sheva is one of the largest cities in Israel, and has a population of over 530,000.

The Israeli government said that any attacks on Beer Sheba would result in a large scale ground operation in Gaza. Olmert said that “A responsible government is not happy to go to war, but does not evade it.”
