Peres and Livni To Attend UN Interfaith Conference

President Shimon Peres and Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni, who recently failed to become Prime Minister, will travel to New York together for a UN Interfaith Conference arranged by Saudi King Abdullah.

All of the 192 United Nations members are expected to send a representative to the conference. It will be interesting to see how Israel interacts with many nations who do not recognize the existence of the Jewish state.

In addition to Peres, Livni, and Abdullah, dignitaries expected to attend include US President George W. Bush, Spain’s King Juan Carlos, Kuwati Emir Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah, Lebanese President Michel Suleiman. The resresentatives are going to discuss religious issues surrounding Judaism, Islam, Christianity, and other religions from around the world.

Peres said that he does not expect any peace breakthroughs at the conference, but appreciates the milestone of Israeli leaders sitting with leaders from around the Middle East in a peaceful dialogue. Peres will invite a leader from each of the three major religions represented in Israel.
