Mayor Election Results Comming In

by Eric on November 11, 2008

It appears that business leader Nir Barkat is going to win the Jerusalem mayor election. In the voting, which took place today, Barkat competed with United Torah Judaism’s Meir Porush.

Violence errupted between several Haredim and the police at a polling station. Arabs in eastern Jerusalem held a strike by closing shops and restaurants.

This was a hotly contested election. It looks like the numbers will be about 50% for Barkat and 42% for Porush. Two other candidates took the remaining 8%.
