Israeli Solider Gets 21 Days in Prison… For Yawning

by Eric on November 12, 2008

At a memorial ceremony for Yitzhak Rabin on Monday, a soldier “yawned without covering his mouth.” A commander saw him, stopped his speech, and ordered 21 days in prison for the “disrespectful act.”

I know that military ceremonies require respect, particularly from members of the army in attendance. This, however, seems a bit ridiculous. Since when is yawning a crime? Apparently since Monday.

On Israeli Army Radio the soldier’s mother said that he was not being disrespectful, he was just tired.
