Australia Turns Against Israel at the UN

by Eric on November 10, 2008

Australia had been a big ally of Israel in the United Nations, but that came to an end with a recent vote.

The UN proposes two annual resolutions regarding Israel, which in itself seems biased. The resolutions say that Israel should remove settlements in the “occupied” territories and that the Geneva Convention should apply in the same disputed territories.

Australia, the United States, and several other small countries have stood by Israel historically. This year, however, Australia changed its tune.

The Australian Jewish community is outraged and many suspect the change has to do with Australia’s bid for a seat in the UN Security Council.

Either way, it is dangerous when Israel loses such a close friend.
