US President George W. Bush, mulling about for his final few months in office, has a new idea for Syria-Israel peace. His plan is that Israel gives Syria the entire Golan in exchange for a severance of all ties with Iran.
I don’t think this is a good deal or it will work. The reasoning is that 1) Israel has to give up the Golan and 2) Iran will not just give up its control over Syria.
If you have ever been to the Golan and Kineret region of Israel, you understand number one on my list. The Golan is a hugely strategic territory. It is full of Israeli citizens (both Jewish and Druze). That should be enough reason not to give it up. As our friends say, Gamla shall never fall again.
The second reason is also fairly self explanatory. Iran is trying to be a super power in the Middle East. They are on the way to doing it. They control Syria and Southern Lebanon in addition to factions in Gaza, Iraq, and elsewhere in the Mid East. They will not just say, “okay, it was nice running everything that happens in Syria but we will stop because the US said so.” Not gonna happen.
Do you think it would work?
