Bahrain Reaches Out To Middle East, Includes Israel

by Eric on October 1, 2008

Bahrain, considered a “pro-West” Arab Muslim country, has reached out to neighbors in the Middle East, including Iran and Turkey, to create a new organization to unite the region. Bahrain’s Foreign Minister, Sheik Khalid bin Ahmed al-Kalifa, did something no one expected. He invited Israel to join in.

He said, “Why don’t we all sit together even if we have differences and even if we don’t recognize each other?” He continued, “Aren’t we all members of a global organization called the United Nations? Why not [come together] on a regional basis? This is the only way to solve our problems. There’s no other way to solve them, now or in 200 years.” (from the Guardian)

The King of Bahrain appointed a Jewish woman to a major diplomatic post and made headlines inviting Jews back to the country.

It would be great to see something like this take root. What do you think? Will it work?
