US Sells Israel 25 Stealth Fighters

by Eric on September 30, 2008

The United States government as agreed to sell Israel 25 F-35 stealth fighter jets for $15.2 billion. The Pentagon said that the sale is in the best interest of the US, as it is important for Israel to have a technological edge over hostile neighbors.

The jets cost between $70 million and $80 million per plane, and were sold with an option for Israel to purchase bombers down the road.

Before the sale is transacted, congress must vote to allow the sale. No opposition is expected and it is assumed that the vote will pass within 30 days, which would be before the November presidential election. Israel plans to purchase up to 100 similar jets over the next decade.
