According to a recent article by woman’s issue blog Jezebel, Tzipi Livni has to overcome sexism to become the next Prime Minister. Clearly they don’t understand Israeli politics.
Jezebel quotes articles from Newsweek and Reuters that discuss Haredi communities around Israel. Because Haredi newspapers don’t feature images of women, Haredim don’t use the Internet or watch TV, and they make of 15% of voters in Israel, Livni has to overcome these sex issues to win their votes.
Jezebel has no idea how Israel works. The Haredi voters would never vote for a person anyway, they, like all Israelis, vote for a party. Specifically, Haredim vote for parties like Shas and other religious parties.
The current coalition process that Livni is going through is to work with other parties. Israel is not a representative democracy where voters choose a person, like in the US, Israelis vote for parties. The party members are either in or out depending on their position on the list and how many votes the party gets. Livni is trying to work with other parties, not win over voters.
No Haredi party (with the exception of Shas) would ever side with Kadima on anything. The word kadima (moving forward) is enough reason for most Haredi voters to pick another option.
So, Jezebel, before you call my people sexist, learn the facts.
