I mentioned in a previous post that the Democratic National Convention is in my hometown next week, and I want to give a little update on the happenings regarding the Jewish community.
About 50,000 people are expected for the DNC. Of those, the majority will be composed of the delegates, media, politicians, activists, celebrities, and, recently announced, Rabbis.
Okay, so Rabbis are not going to be a significant portion of the participants. However, their profile could not be bigger. (Except for Barak Obama)
One Rabbi, David Saperstein of the Reform movement’s political lobby in Washington, is going to make the invocation for Barak Obama’s acceptance speech at Invesco Field in front of 70,000 onlookers. Another group of Rabbi’s is participating in an interfaith political group that will be concurrently with the convention and will partake in many convention activities. Seven high profile Rabbis are currently on the bill.
What is my role in all of this? I couldn’t get Obama tickets, so I have to settle just being an observer in a traffic jam for the week.
