The IAEA, the international nuclear watchdog, wants to go back to Syria for a followup inspection. The agency visited Syria after an Israeli air strike blew up an alleged nuclear reactor.
At the same time, Syria is pushing for a seat on the 35 member IAEA board. The United States is lobbying against the request, reasoning that Syria may try to use the position to divert attention away from their alleged secret nuclear program.
The threat of Syrian nuclear weapons nearly rivals that of Iran, as the Israeli neighbor is also known for sponsoring and supplying terrorist organizations such as Hezbollah.
