Senior aids told YNet that they are confident in a landslide victory in the Kadima election. They expect Tzipi Livni to beat Shaul Mofaz for the Kadima, and possible Prime Minister, spot with no trouble.
However, the are more apprehensive about her abilities to form a majority coalition government. For those of you who don’t know a whole lot about Israel’s Parliamentary system, it works like this:
The chair of the political party with most Knesset seats is given the opportunity to form a majority coalition. This includes making deals with other parties to support a new Prime Minister. This is the real politics part of the process, as leaders of coalition parties are generally given ministerial positions for their support. If the Prime Minister fails, the President has the discretion to allow additional time for this process. In the case of a Prime Minister resignation, the President will likely call for a new election if the new leading party chair fails at forming a new government.
If a new election takes place, which is very likely, it should happen in early 2009. I am hoping for a Likud/HaIchud HaLeumi coalition, but that’s just me.
