City Focus Israel: Ashdod

by Eric on August 8, 2008

Ashdod is a Mediterranean coastal city with a population of over 200,000. Contrary to popular belief, the largest port in Israel lies in Ashdod, responsible for 60% of imports, rather than Haifa.

Historically, archeologists have found that the area was first settled by the Cannanites, as discussed in the Torah.

In 1948, Egyptian forces took control of Ashdod during the War of Independence. However, the Egyptians retreated and Israel held control from 1948 to present.

From 1990-2001, the city experienced a 150% growth rate, and welcomed over 100,000 Soviet immigrants.

The weather is warm or hot all year round, which makes Ashdod a popular destination for beach goers. The city has shopping, outdoor recreation, archological history, and a large culture center. It is easily accessible by road, bus, and rail, and is a great place to see.

The city is 95% Jewish, of which 30% are considered observant. The city is also home to the largest Karite Jewish population in the world.
