Syrian President: World Will Pay the Price if Iran Attacked

by Eric on July 14, 2008

Syrian President Bashar Assad, who completely avoided Ehud Olmert at a Paris meeting for the Union of the Mediterranean, is a hopeful partner for Israeli peace. However, he recently decided to side with Iran in the emerging battle of words and military strength.

These statements do not make Israeli-Syrain peace likely to come together quickly. In seperate statements, Assad said that peace with Israel could begin in a 6 month to 2 year time frame.

Israelis are probably not happy to see Assad side with Iran, who last week conducted two weeks of missile tests aimed to scare Israel and the United States.

From the J-Post:

“The US and the world will pay a heavy price,” Assad said in an interview
with the French Radio station, Inter-Radio, adding, “Iran has already emphasized
that Israel will pay directly for such an attack.”

“The problem is that when one side begins such an operation in the
Middle East, it won’t be possible to control the consequences which will likely
influence the region for many years to come,” continued the Syrian president
