Prime Minister Ehud Olmert received more bad news for his political career. He is now accused of double charging the state for travel expenses while major of Jerusalem and as a member of the Knesset.
This news emerged less than a week before his party, Kadima, is going to have an election for party chair. If Olmert loses, which is likely, polls indicate that he will be replaced by Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni.
The domino effect of that election would most likely be a breaking of the current coalltion with Labor, and a new national election. Polls show that the winner of a national election would be Likud, and Benjamin Netanyahu will become prime minister again.
It is sad for Israel that such a corrupt criminal was able to rise to become prime minister. I hope that he is quickly removed and Israel is able to move on from this dark era of political leadership.

My view is that most things about Premier Olmert and his conduct were known prior to his assumption of office, and therefore also prior to the elections.
I agree with you that it is sad that he was able to rise to power, but recognizing the fact stated above, means he rose to power despite these things, in a democratic election.
Therefore, there is no reason to expect any better from the next election, when the same deluded public that voted for Olmert will once more be given the power to vote.
Netanyahu was thrown over in shame in 1999, presented a merciless economic policy both as Prime-Minister and as Treasury Minister, and his expected rise to power in the next elections (on which I agree with you) is far from good news for Israel.
I agree that the political climate in Israel is far from perfect. I agree that there could be better than Bibi to represent the people. If it were up to me, I would pick HaIchud HaLeumi. However, in the near future, Likud, Avodah, or Kadima will be in charge, and of those three I am happiest with Likud.
