Israeli Company Unveils New AWACS Spy Plane

by Eric on July 11, 2008

Israel Aerospace Industries unveiled a new spy plane similar to the famous large AWACS military long range reconnaissance jet. The new plane, officially a Conformal Airborne Early Warning & Control (CAEW) aircraft, will allow for high tech radar and mapping to aid Israeli combat aircraft in combat.

The plane is a gutted and rebuilt Gulfstream G550, which is a small business jet. This plane, however, is suited with long range, high tech radar and computer systems that can up link with Israel Air Force jets on combat and bombing missions.

IAI said that the aircraft could easily be used to assist long range bombing missions, such as may take place in Iran, but that the timing of the release is a pure coincidence. The plane has a range of 6,750 nautical miles, and can stay airborne for hours as an airborne mobile radar station anywhere in the region.
