City Focus Israel: Rishon LeZion

by Eric on July 7, 2008

This city is fondly viewed as one of the most Zionist cities in Israel’s history. Founded in 1882, the 835 acres was purchased by ten Ukrainian immigrants. The ten immigrants were able to cultivate the sandy, arid region into hearty wine industry. They named the city Rishon LeZion (meaning First To Zion), as they were at the beginning of a major wave of olim (immigrants).

Today, 225,000 call Rishon LeZion home. Many of the residents reside in the “Old City” containing neighborhoods dating back to the city’s founding in the 1880s.

Rishon LeZion is home to Haviv School, the first all Hebrew elementary school in modern times, and many beautiful parks, neighborhoods, and synagoges.

The city is in the “Center” region of Israel just south of Tel Aviv. The temprate climate make Rishon LeZion a great place to visit year round.
