Anti-Israel Group "Free Gaza" To Attempt Sailing into Gaza Port

by Eric on July 30, 2008

“Free Gaza” is an international anti-Israel group working to free Gaza from the evil, imperial Israelis. (That is the stereotype, right?)
Free Gaza claims that while Israel says Gaza is no longer occupied, Israel is controling all land, sea, and air routes into the disputed territory. First off, Israel has the right to close boarders between Israel and Gaza, as it is their soverign boarder. Even the UN agrees. Egypt has been dealing with the southern Gaza boarder. Israel’s interest there (as with sea and air) is the smuggling of terrorist weapons. It has been proven that this is happening, so I don’t think Israel is doing anything wrong. It is defense. Israel is not restricting the Jordan boarder because Jordan’s government is not set on destroying Israel.

The group is planning a sailing trip from Greece to Gaza (via Cyprus). The two ships will carry 44 passengers.

The trip planner says: “Israel claims that Gaza is no longer occupied, yet Israeli forces control Gaza by land, sea and air. We’ll enter Gaza from international waters at the invitation of Palestinian NGO’s but without Israeli authorization, thereby recognizing Palestinian control over its borders.”

They plan to use a route that bypasses both Israeli and Egyptian waters and enter into Gaza directly. There is no word from the Israeli government on if they plan to block the ship.
