John Bolton, former United States Diplomat to the United Nations, predicts that Israel will attack Iran after the November United States election, but before the new president is sworn in.
Bolton further said that the Arab world would likely, privately, welcome attacks against Iranian nuclear sites, as the powerful Muslim nation is leading to much anxiety from the West. Many Western companies shy away from doing business in the Middle East due to stability questions, and the removal of this major threat could be helpful to regional economies.
Bolton personally believes that military action is necessary in Iran, and that the Bush administration has been to weak to make any moves. The administration, battered by the war in Iraq, is leaning away from further military action.
The Israelis have one eye on the calendar because of the pace at which the
Iranians are proceeding both to develop their nuclear weapons capability and to
do things like increase their defences by buying new Russian anti-aircraft
systems and further harden the nuclear installations .
“They’re also obviously looking at the American election calendar. My judgement is they would not want to do anything before our election because there’s no telling what impact it could have on the election.”
But waiting for either Barack Obama, the Democratic candidate, or his Republican opponent John McCain to be installed in the White House could preclude military action happening for the next four years or at least delay it.
Some believe that Bush would attack Iran if Obama is elected in November. John McCain is much more likely to invoke military powers than Barak Obama, who has committed to a diplomacy first plan with all nations, both friend and foe.
