City Focus Israel: Dimona

by Eric on May 7, 2008

Dimona, located in the Negev desert, is the third largest city in the Negev region of Israel. The population of just over 30,000 works mainly in industrial areas surrounding the city. This includes the well known chemical plant the Dead Sea Works, which has a work agreement with neighboring Jordan.

Dimona is best known for a research center near the city. It is alleged by many that this research center is the home of Israel’s nuclear program, though the government has never officially announced any nuclear program.

The population of Dimona is mainly Jewish. Many immigrants came from Northern Africa in the 1950s and Russia in the 1990s.

The city is also home to roughly 2000 “Black Hebrews”. These immigrants are not recognized as Jewish, but consider themselves to be descendants of the original Israelites. These groups around surrounded by controversy, and are generally living in Israel with permanent residency status, not Israeli citizenship.
